Timeline of an X-Files Universe
Including Material from Millennium, Strange Luck and Lone Gunmen

Since all of this information has come from other sources, I don't feel as though I can copyright it. Feel free to use it as you wish, within the bounds of other copyrights on this material.  If you like the occasional hypothesis that I have left strewn about within, please recall where you found it. X-Files, Millennium, Strange Luck, and related terminology, concepts, and such are owned by ? Entertainment. They are used here without permission

Notes on sources:
The sources used for this were the episodes and real world history. Books and Comics were not used. The codes in parentheses indicate the source. Episode titles are referred to in quotations marks.  An "m" before a title refers to a Millenium episode, and an "s" refers to a "Strange Luck" episode. The rest of the coding system is loosely based on developed by Larry Nemecek for Star Trek.   The Strange Luck episode "Lightning Strikes" and the X-Files episode "Millennium" clearly place these series in the X-Files universe.

Following Nemecek's precedent, items marked with a /v contain information based on visual clues such as computer screen displays, files, and so on.  Finally, all items below that marked with an * are conjectural based on the information on hand, and may be further explained by a description in brackets.

Dates given in brackets are air dates, which for Millenium episodes appear to generally match the dates given in the episodes.  This usage is less reliable for X-Files episodes, and utterly unknown for Strange Luck episodes, but it gives me something to work from.

- The Chronology -

c.4 Billion BP

• A rock containing oily, worm-like organisms capable of penetrating human bodies and effecting them is allegedly blown off the surface of Mars by a meteor impact. It eventually finds its way to Earth, near Tunguska ("Terma").

c1400

• A volcano in the Olympia Range erupts, mutating a strain of wood mites ("Darkness Falls").

c1800

• An EBE may have been frozen into a Yukon glacier about this time, but probably not ("Gethsemene").

c1804

• The Lewis and Clark expedition reports stories of Indians who are able to transform themselves into wolves ("Shapes").

c1820

• A "coven" of Azazael worshippers settle in Milford Haven, New Hampshire ("Die Hand, Die Verletzt").

1863

• 23 Nov    Battle of Chattanooga begins.
• 26 Nov    Sullivan Biddle, soldier of the Confederacy, is killed in a skirmish with Federal troops, while protecting the retreat of Confederate forces from Chatanooga ("The Field Where I Died").

1864

• The Peacock family moves to Home, Pennsylvania ("Home").

1902

• Walter Chaco is born in Dudley, Arkansas ("Our Town").

1903

• Eugene Victor Tooms is registered as being born, and the first of the killings happen in the apartment upstairs from his at 66 Exeter Street, Powhattan Mills,  Maryland ("Squeeze").

1908

• 30 Jun    The Tunguska explosion.

1917

• Harry Cokley is born ("Aubrey").
• 24 Dec     Somewhere in Maryland, Maurice and Lydia kill each other in a lover's pact ("How the Ghosts stole Christmas")

1930

• Ish, a Trego Indian, is born ("Shapes").

1933

• 5 people are mysteriously murdered in Powhattan Mills, Md ("Squeeze").

1934

• A group of WPA loggers vanish in the forests of the Olympia Range, NW coast ("Darkness Falls").

c1935

• *Eddie Van Blundht, Sr. is born with a vestigal tail ("Small Potatoes")
• *The Pennsylvania religious community of the Kindred appear in several photographs ("Genderbender").

1939

• The Cigarette Smoking Man is reported as being a Gestapo agent in Poland (by Mulder in a hypnotic trance in 1996. Mulder claimed to be a Jewish woman in the Warsaw Ghetto).("The Field Where I Died"). [While this appears to be one of many inconsistancies in the CSM's history, the CSM may just be a reincarnation of such an officer.]
• Sep    The liner Queen Anne vanishes in the Bermuda Triangle ("Triangle").

1940

• 20 Aug    Trotsky is assasinated in Mexico City, while at the same moment, the CSM is born in Baton Rouge, LA ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man"). [This is, of course, assuming that the story "A Second Chance" is in any way autobiographical. The main character of "A Second Chance" is named Jack Cloquitt and is probably NOT the CSM's actual name. *Cloquitt*'s father was executed for espionage before the boy could walk, and his mother died of lung cancer before he could talk. The boy entered a long series of orphanages.]                        

1942

• Special Agents Sam Chaney and Tim Ledbetter dissapear in Aubrey, Mo. while investigating "Stranger Killings" of the "Slash Killer" ("Aubrey").
• Takeo Ishimaru directs the experiments conducted by Unit 731 of the Japanese Medical Corps, experimenting on human subjects ("731") [Shiro Ishii was the real life counterpart of Ishimaru].

1943

• 22 Jul    The first test of the "The Philadelphia Experiment" on the USS Eldridge. The Philadelphia Experiment is a project to develop ways to render ships invisible. It is referred to in "Dod Kalm". Scully says that the scientists assigned to the project were soon transfered to the Manhattan Project, while Mulder says that they were relocated to Roswell, Nm [I do feel that I ought to point out that no real, verifiable, evidence that such a project ever took place has ever turned up.]
• 12 Aug    The second test of the "The Philadelphia Experiment" on the USS Eldridge. According to Jessup and the Allende papers the US Navy and the SS Andrew Fursenth are involved in experiments of an invisibility screen. The experiment goes awry and the ship teleports from Philadelphia to Norfolk, Va. [According to one rather well known source, this event is one end of a large time vortex that will be eventually explored and exploited by the government in the Montauk Project, and triggering other explorations in time and teleportation.]
• 27 Aug    The USS Eldridge is actually commissioned and begins its operating history  (according to the Navy).

1944

• Walter Chaco is shot down over New Guinea. He spends six months with the cannibal Jala tribe ("Our Town")..

1945

• Project ["Operation"] Paperclip is begun to preserve German and Japanese research data and technicians and bring them to this country ("Paper Clip", "731", "Nisei"). [The Germans immigrants have been fairly open, but the protection of the Japanese units from war-crimes trials has allegedly been quite firm.]
• A B-29 carrying an atomic bomb, with an escort of P-51 Mustangs have a run in with a "foo fighter" at 171E 42N.
• Everyone crashes and sinks. The Navy sends the submarine Zeus Faber to locate the crash site, which it does, although of the crew of 144, only 7 return alive ("731", "Nisei").
• Harry Cokely is arrested and imprisoned for raping and slashing up a Mrs. Thibedeaux ("Aubrey").

1946

• 1st X-File. A case of Lycanthropy in the Northwest coast region ("Shapes").

1947

• A "Jersey Devil" incident causes the opening of an X-File ("Jersey Devil"). [Note that the "Jersey Devil" in this case is a feral, cannibal human which bears no resemblance to the winged chimeric creature of the actual legends.]
• 8 Jul    The Roswell Crash is recovered.
• Deep Throat claims the Roswell Crash was a "smokescreen". He also claims that it was the source of the first alien DNA ("Erlenmeyer Flask"). He also claims that the crash prompted five nations (US, USSR, UK, Germany, PRC) to reach a secret accord that any aliens found alive would be killed ("E.B.E") - [although he has been seen referring to this as "Security Council Resolution 1013 ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].  This may be about when the conspiracy begins.
• In Roswell, New Mexico, members of an all-African-American baseball team, the Roswell Grays, plays an all white team ("The Unnatural").

1948

• Apr    Mulder claims that this is the correct date of the Philadelphia Experiment's transportation of the USS Eldridge ("Dod Kalm"). Scully says that the scientists assigned to the project were soon transfered to the Manhattan Project, while Mulder says that they were relocated to Roswell, NM

1949

• A royal battleship vanishes in the north sea ("Dod Kalm").

1950

• Walter Sergei Skinner born ("Tunguska").

1952

• Edward Skur, a victim of a xenotransplantation experiment, murders a number of people, finally being captured by FBI Agent Arthur Dales and turned over to Bill Mulder ("Traveler"). Mulder eventually releases him.
• 15 Jul    Roland Fuller and Arthur Grable are born ("Roland").

1953

• The CSM appears to be working with Bill Mulder, either in Military Intellegence, or the State Department (assuming that the stories of the Zeus Faber can be believed in their entirety) ("731","Nisei","Apocrypha") [Note that *if* we accept the birthdate of 20 Aug 1940 for CSM, then it is impossible for him to have interviewed the Zeus Faber survivor in 1953 (he would have been 13, not the 23 he appears. Also, both he and Bill Mulder are Army captains in 1962].

1954

• More lycanthropic murders in the Northwest Coast ("Shapes").

1959

• More lycanthropic murders in the Northwest Coast ("Shapes").
• Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper die in an air crash, leading Clyde Bruckman to focus on how people die ("Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose").

1960

• * The Litchfield experiments produce the genetically engineered "Adams" and "Eves" about this time ("Eve").
• The cancer-eating Albert Tanner is born ("Leonard Betts").
• * William and Maggie Scully are married about this time.

1961

• [CSM takes part in the assasination of Patrice Lacumba in the Congo ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].
• 17 Apr    Bay of Pigs Invasion.
• 17 May    Clayton Jones is captured by "fire demons" near Dudley, Ark. ("Our Town").
• 31 May    [CSM takes part in the assination of Rapheil Trujio by the Dominicans ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].
• 13 Oct    Fox William Mulder is born Chilmark, Mass (Pop. 650) ("Small Potatoes"/v).

1962

• Melissa Scully is born ("Apocrypha"/v)
• Oct    [Fox Mulder sais his first words, "JFK" ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].
• 22 Oct    Cuban Missle Crisis.
• 30 Oct    [CSM, captain in the army and bunkmate of Bill Mulder at Fort Bragg, accepts the assignment to assassinate John Kennedy ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].

1963

• 5 people are mysteriously murdered in Powhattan Mills, Md ("Squeeze").
• The child, Cecil Lively, reportedly dies in a fire. ("Fire").
• Six soviet minesweepers disappear north west of Britain ("Dod Kalm").
• Openshaw, Mulder and the CSM begin "the Project" ("Two Fathers")
• 22 Nov    [The Cigarette-Smoking man kills JFK ("Musings of a Cigarette-Smoking Man")]. John Fitzgerald Byers is born ("Usual Suspects").

1964

• More lycanthropic murders in the Northwest Coast ("Shapes").
• 22 Jan    Samantha T. Mulder born in Chilmark, Mass ("Paper Clip"/v).
• 23 Feb    Dana Katherine Scully born ("Lazarus","One Breath")   Scully has at two brothers, Bill, Jr. and Charlie (one older, one younger) ("Roland","Born Again"). and a sister Melissa ("One Breath").
• 29 Feb    Alex Sanders is born to Robert and Jean Sanders (s-"Lightning Strikes").

c1965

• Ishimaru puportedly dies, but instead moves to Perkey, WV and begins to experiment on the inmates of a Leper "hospital" ("731","Nisei").
• A commercial airliner crashes, with only a single survivor, a small boy, Alex Sanders.  This child is taken in by one of the rescuers, Joseph Harper, and his wife Marilyn.  They adopt the child and name him "Chance" Harper (s-"Soul Survivor", s-"Lightning Strikes").

1966

• The Scullys are in Japan ("Christmas Carol").

1967

• Aug    A group of girlscouts are among those who see UFOs at Lake Okoboji, Iowa, including Darlene Morris ("Conduit").

1968

• Mar    [CSM writes "Take a chance; A Jack Colquitt Adventure" under the nom de plume "Raul Bloodworth" ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].
• 4 Apr    [CSM assassinates Martin Luther King, Jr. ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].

c1970

• A UFO is seen over Hanoi. Deep Throat claims to have been in Vietnam with the CIA when this is shot down, and forcing him to execute an EBE ("EBE"). [Deep Throat also says that this UFO couldn't be shot down ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].
• After a neighbor's house burns down, Mulder spends a night in the ruins looking for looters, causing a deep fear of fire, about this time ("Fire").
• A group of marines stationed at Paris Island undergoes a proceedure to eliminate their need for sleep, and turning them into supersoldiers ("Sleepless").
• Dana Scully and her brother have an altercation with each other over a rabbit ("Christmas Carol").

1972

• Duane Barry, FBI agent, is shot in the head in the line of duty ("Duane Barry").
• Scully has her first encounter with Death while hunting with her father and brothers about this time ("One Breath")..

1973

• The Government begins to experiment with alien DNA on US citizens? ("Erlenmeyer Flask","Red Museum", "Paper Clip"). A photograph (Bill Mulder, CSM, Victor Klemperer, the Well Manicured Man, and others) is taken at the West Virginia mine where the medical files and DNA of many, many people are archived ???  Bill Mulder starts having doubts about "the Project" he is working on with CSM ("Paper Clip").
• Lucy Householder is kidnapped ("Oubliette").
• The Amerian Indian Movement occupies a church at Wounded Knee, SD ("Shapes").
• Oct    Serial Killer John Lee Roche sells a vacuum cleaner to William Mulder for his wife ("Paper Hearts").
• 27 Nov    Samantha Mulder is abducted, seemingly by aliens ("Conduit", "Little Green Men","Closure"). Actually, she was taken by agents of CSM.  Although one version of facts surrounding her life suggest that she was placed in a foster home (and eventually the CSM tells her that he's her father and keeps close tabs on her ("Redux II")), it is more likely that she was abducted and experimented on to try and make her into a human-alien hybrid ("Two Fathers", "Closure").  Cassandra Spender is abducted for the first time ("Two Fathers").  Samantha may have spent some time with Jeffrey Spender ("Closure")
• Mulder's mother leaves, blaming Bill Mulder (correctly it seems) for Samantha's disappearance ("731", "Nisei").

1976

• "The Coming of the New Age" Beginning of the Church of the Red Museum ("Red Museum").; of "Walk-ins" (Second spirits of the first body)..

1977

• 2 Voyager probes launched.
• "Wow" signal found in 21cm frequency band by Ohio State researchers ("Little Green Men").
• In San Diego, Scully first encounters real evil when her Sunday school teacther is murdered ("Orison").

1978

• Lucy Householder finally escapes from her kidnapper ("Oubliette").
• * Mulder should enter college about this time. He will graduate from Oxford with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology.

1979

• 23 Feb    Scully receives the golden cross necklace as a birthday present from her mother ("Ascension").
• According to her diary, Samantha escapes from the people who have been testing her.   She eventually makes her way to a hospital where she is followed by the CSM.   She vanishes from a locked room, however ("Closure").

1980

• [CSM fixes the outcome of the US/USSR Olympic hockey match "'cause payback's a bitch" ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].

1981

• * Scully should enter college about this time. She attends the University of Maryland (although it has been suggested that she attended school in California for a year first), studying German ("Unruhe").

1982

• Fall    Augustus Cole is admitted to a VA hospital for sleep disorders ("Sleepless")
• Wade Davis studies Zombification in Haiti ("Fresh Blood").

1983

• Mulder attends Oxford. He as a relationship with Phoebe Green ("Fire").

1984

• Murder of Detective Charlie Morris ("Born Again").
• Mulder receives an AB from Oxford in Psychology. He returns to the US ("Kill Switch"/v).
• Mulder begins at Quantico, according to his file in the AI ("Kill Switch"/v). It also lists him as unmarried.

1985

• "Neech" Manley is sentenced to death for being the driver in a Louisiana Liquor store hold up ("The List").

1986

• 15 May    Scully hands in her Senior thesis on "Einstein's Twin Paradox". It mentions Time Travel, MJ-12, and quantum physics ("X-Files", "Synchrony", "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man").
• Dana Scully graduates from the University of Maryland with a BS in Physics about this time ("Jersey Devil").
• Richard Odin, aka Dr. Richard Herman, left the AMA after being accused of unethical medical treatments. ("Red Museum").

1987

• Deep Throat says that school children are injected with cloned alien DNA in a "southern state" (although as we know they have been being injected for far longer in Delta Glen, Wisconsin ("Red Museum"))("Erlenmeyer Flask").

1988

• Mulder graduates from Quantico (implied in "X-Files") and begins three years of work with the Behavioral Science unit, where he briefly becomes the protege of William Patterson ("Grotesque").
• Mulder eventually writes a monograph on serial killers and the occult which helps the Bureau to capture Monte Props ("X-Files").
• Sometime during this period he is married ("The Usual Suspects"/v)

1989

• Mulder's first case in the Washington Bureau (under Reggie Purdue) is the capture of John Barnett. However, in the process, a fellow agent is killed, leading to Mulder's preference for working alone ("Young At Heart").
• May    Mulder meets Byers, Frihike, and Langley at an electronics fair in Baltimore. Origin of the Lone Gunmen ("Unusual Suspects").
• 16 Jun    Mulder undergoes hypontic regression therapy from Dr. Heits Werber to remember what happened to Samantha ("X-Files", "Conduit").
• 16 Sep    John Barnett is reported dead in prison, but is actually undergoing experiments by Dr. Joseph Ridley to reverse the aging process ("Young at Heart").
• Scully begins to drift away from religion ("Revelations").

1990

• Mulder helps capture John Lee Roche, the traveling vacuum cleaner salesman/serial killer ("Paper Hearts").
• Mulder discovers the X-Files ("X-Files"). His partner is Diana Fowley ("The End")
• The later era events of "Travelers". Sometime after these he gets a divorce.
• Spring    Dana Scully grads from Medical School with a degree in Medicine about this time. She is recruited by the FBI, although her parents do not approve ("X-Files", "Beyond the Sea").

1991

• Luther Boggs is convicted, thanks to Mulder ("Beyond the Sea").
• Mulder starts opening up the X-files.
• There is Chemical warfare experimentation during the Gulf War ("Terma", "Gethsemene", "Redux")
• Dec 24    Mikhail Gorbachev resigns, officially signalling the end of the Soviet government. [Cigarette-Smoking Man and Deep Throat end the life of "the new enemy", an EBE ("Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")].

1991

• * A "Year Long relationship at Academy between Jack Willis and Dana Scully" begins ("Lazarus"). She may be teaching at the Academy at this point.

1992

• NASA'a High Resolution Microwave Survey is begun. ("Little Green Men").
