Petition for Tobias LeCrown for Land and Bounty. In the petition,
Children and ages match those given in Upton log. Tobias is awarded 300
acres (although the grant for 5 people would be 250 acres). Later records describe
this as being on Crims Creek "also known as Hans Anderson Creek". [HA]
Tobias LeCrown's petition to His Majesty's Council of the Province of South Carolina,
dated November 4, 1752, considered on November 7, 1752, states that "he came down
with his family, and took freight at Rotterdam, in the Upton, Capt Gardiner bound to this
port" (Charles Town), that he "is willing to settle on such land as he can find
in this Province, proper to support his wife and small children, he has a wife and three
children viz: Frederick, aged about 3 years, Margaret, abt 2 1/2, Elizabeth, aged abt 3
months and never had any land granted him in this Province." A grant of of 250 acres
was made to Tobias Lecrown on January 2, 1754. Royal Grants Book 5, Page 301.

Petition for Laurence LeCrown for Land and Bounty. In the petition,
Laurence states that he sailed from Rotterdam on the Upton with his family under
encouragement given to foreign Protestants. Children and ages match those given in Upton
log, except that 14 year old "John" is listed as "John Adolph".
Laurence is awarded 450 acres (or 50 acres per family member) to be set aside by the Crown
surveyor, but generally "on a dry branch of, or on, Cannon Creek." The
petition was read on 7 November 1752, but was actually approved on in March 1753. [HA]
He was granted a 450A tract on headwaters of Cannons Cr. about 3 miles east of Newberry
Courthouse. [CN/WH]

forth that the Petitioner came into this Province on the Encouragement given to foreign

Gardiner bound to this Port. He hath got himself discharged from the ship as appears by
Messrs Austin & Laurence's Certificate and is desirous imediately to settle in this
Province on such land as he can find proper for the maintenance of his Family; He has a
wife & seven children viz Maria Sofia aged abt 25 yeras, July Eliz, abt 23, Mathewlena
aged abt 21, Eliz. aged abt 13, John Adolf 14, Laurence abt 12 & Frederick aged abt 4
years and never had any land in this Province - and humbly prays your Excellency's
Honorable order to the Surveyor Genl to lay out to the Petitioner 450 acres of land free

Read the Petition of Tobias LeCrown humbly showing that the
Petitioner with many other Relations was invited to come to this Province being assured of
great Encourgagement given to Foreign Portestants, he came down with his family, and took
freight at Rotterdam, in the Upton (2) Capt Gardiner bound to this port. He hath cleared
himself of the said ship as appears by Messrs Austin and Laurence Certificate of the same.
He is willing to settle on such land as he can find in this Province, proper to support
his wife and small children, he has a wife and three children viz: Frederick, aged about 5
years, Margaret abt 2 1/2, Elizabeth aged abt 3 months and never had any land granted him
in this Province -- and humbly prays his Excellency and their Honors to order the Surveyor
Genl to lay out to the Petitioner 300 acres of land -
free of charges and that he may have his most gracious Majesty Bounty -- and the

The land granted to Laurence Lecrown was surveyed out by Deputy Surveyor, John
Pearson, on the 22d day of June 1753. This plat of 450 acres was situated as laying
in the forks between the Broad and Saludy Rivers, on a branch of Cannon Creek. It
was butting and bounding to the NE part of some vacant land , part on land laid out by
Nicholas Weis, and part laid out on land to George Pfister to the SW; part on land laid
out to Jacob Kortz, and part left vacant, and to the NW on vacant land and both of such
shape and size and form as the said plat represents. [HA]
The survey for 450 'being in the fork between Broad & Saludy Rivers, on a branch of
Cannon Creek' was certified 22 June 1753 [Colonial Plats, Vol 12, pg 57]. Grant was dated
