This is one of the two holy Rood days, the other taking place in September

Crouch-mass (from Cruche or 'Cross' mass) goes back to the late 1300s as a documentable term.  A Rood (or "Rod" ) is another term for a cross as a form of execution, and can be documented back to the 900s. Rod possibly referring to the crossed piece that the person is hung from
