Kzinti (Note: Animated Series only) The Kzinti are a species of large felinoids bipeds, or creatures descended from cat-like plains predators. They range over 2 m tall, standing erect, and mass in excess of 200 kgs. They are covered in orange and black fur, have claws that extend from their finger tips, ears that resemble Chinese parasol segments round, which can fold up to protect their inner ear, They also have circular rather than elliptical, shaped pupils. Their voices are harsh and loud, and therefore sonic dampeners are usually installed in public facilities where Kzin frequent. The terrifying image is concluded by long naked rat-like tails. Individual Kzin can be distinguished from others by their exact coloring and individual markings such as an occaisional white patch, a black mask around the eyes, a yellow stripe, a red spot, etc. Their rictus, though resembling a smile, is definitely an expression of anger. They are culturally carnivorus, although, biologically omnivorous. They have an extensive rib structure that acts as a form of internal armor. They are a warrior species, bred and genetically engineered in antiquity by their ancestors to be the equal of their legendary heros. Kzinti are, as a rule, fiercely warlike, extremely aggressive, competitive, honorable, courageous, as well as impulsive, incautious, agressive and stubborn in their struggling to achieve fame and glory, without which they can never have a real Name. They had been at a medieval cultural level, and about a rennaissance technological level when they were discovered by the five armed Jatoki. The Jatoki tried to hire the Kzin as a mercenary species, and in turn became the Kzinti first slave race. While the male Kzinti were being reborn as Heros, the females were being genetically reassembled into barely-sentient subservience, smaller in stature than her mate. Because of this lack of intellegence, Kzin males often mistakenly assume all females, of whatever species, are no more intellegent than the "dumb animals" of their species, and therefore beneath their notice. The planet Kzin is the 4th world from the star known on Earth as 61 Ursa Majoris. It is a higher gravity world than Earth, has few large bodies of land and much of it is covered in a vast savannah. Overpopulation has never been the social ill for Kzin that it has become for other species, leading some to suggest that the Kzin look at the overcrowding occuring on other worlds with disgust. Kzin, particularly the post-engineered "Heros" have long had the optimum means for controlling the size of their own populations, their own agressive nature. As a community becomes more crowded, the easier it becomes to take offense, and then for violence to break out. The Kzin "code duello" maintains their population at "polite" levels. For several thousand years, Kzin ruled an empire of slaves and meat animals. They still regard most aliens, particularly herbivores, as cowards, slaves, or a potential meal. Politcally, they maintain their traditional Feudal style aristocracy, centered on the "The Patriarch", or their ruler. The Rijt are the Patriarch's clan, or the ruling family of Kzin. In general Kzinti have no names, and are merely designated by their job, until they earned a name, or partial name, through some grand and heroic activity. Some Kzin have telepathic powers, although these are rare. They are forced addicts of a hormone extracted from the lymph glands of the Sthondat, an animal from the Kzin Homeworld. Telepaths are often nearly insane, by either Kzin or Human standards. They are also careless about their appearance, and are in many ways the antithesis of the Kzin Hero. Telepaths do not seem to enjoy reading the minds of others, but their own power can be great they may find it very difficult not to do so. Trained to read the thoughts of potential opponents even across thousands of kilometers of space, at closer ranges even trained adepts may find their minds being invaded by Kzin telepaths. They can be particularly nauseated by having to endure reading the minds of herbivores and females of other species. Telepaths are regularly considered little more than an exploitable commodity for "Heros" to use. Kzinti telepaths are often found as crewmen aboard police vessels, and often in support of pirate raids. Over the past two and a half centuries there have been four major wars between Humanity and Kzin, called the "Man-Kzin" wars, as well as numerous smaller skirmishes. The Sirius Star System was the sight of the final battle of the last war, known as the "Kzinti's Last Stand", and is the sight that witnessed the signing of the "Treaty of Sirius", or the "Fourth Truce with Man", a treaty that confines the Kzin Patriarchy to a a few dozen worlds. The treaty has stripped the Kzinti of their empire and grants the Kzin only probationary status as an aggressor species, and allows them to maintain a very few police vessels and no warships. However, some Kzin have ignored the treaty and have resorted to piracy, with the unspoken approval of the Patriarchy. Even a century after the treaty, the Kzin male population has been reduced to barely a tenth of the number it was before the first encounter with mankind. Although each of the wars decimated the male Kzin population, Kzinti females were virtually untouched by the conflicts since they did not engage in combat. All Kzin currently alive are direct descendants of those males who managed to avoid death in the M-K wars. These survived mainly through dumb luck, developing a wit or forbearance to avoid fighting with humans, and the intelligence or self-restraint necessary to deal with the Federation. Thrintun The awesome Thrint telepathic ability, the Power, was essentially irresistable to lesser beings. Far beyond mere telepathy, the Power enables Thrintun to probe the minds and control the behavior of all the protoplasmic sentients they encounter, totally enslaving them. Its effect has been described as absolute telepathic hynosis, or compulsion. The Power has various modes, attribures, and faculties: Active/Passive, Conscious/Preconscious, Cognative/Empathic/Motor, Listen/Tell/Attention, and so forth. Using his native ability a single Thrint can normally control 20-30 Ptavvs (Slave/non-Thrint) within a 50 km radius, independently or simultaneously - at least on modestly populated worlds with nominal telepathic noise. Distance, though, is of much less importance to the Powers than other factors: numbers, noises, and relativistic velocity-differences. In empty space, a lone Thrint once paralyzed a human at a range of more than 1.6 million kms. Even the emotional outburst of a Thrint may unintentioanlly cripple the minds of those around them. ============= I.
