    Classification guide and Glossary
         Excerpted from The Catalogue of Nameless Horrors, and
What to do about them, by Reginald Spates.  London : Chatto and
Windus, 1881.

Class I       An undeveloped form or vapour, such as spectral
              lights, voices and sounds, ectoplasmic vapours.
              (Poltergeists, Shadows, etc.)

Class II      Obscure physical manifestations of ectoplasm
              (Hands, faces, sheets, etc.).  May haunt.

Class III     Anonymous Hauntings, which are generally human in
              form, and may even be identifiable as a specific
              individual.  They are not necessarily self-aware. 
              This is the average ghost.  May haunt.

Class IV      Anonymous Hauntings, which are generally human in
              form, and will be identifiable as a specific
              individual.  They are at least partly self-aware. 
              Many have powers of a magical nature.  May haunt
              and may possess.

Class V       Anonymous Hauntings, which are generally human in
              form, and may even be identifiable as a specific
              individual.  They are fully self-aware with an
              identity.  Many have powers of a magical nature. 
              May haunt and may possess. (Least Devils,
              Sub-Demons).

Class VI      "Greater Spirits."  Easily identifiable as a
              specific individual.  Totally self-aware with an
              identity.  They have a full range of magical
              powers.  May haunt and may possess. 

Class VII     "Monsters/Beasts."  Definate, but not necessarily
              human, form.  Totally self-aware with an identity. 
              They have a totally magical nature.  May haunt and
              may possess.  (Some Conceptual form creatures,
              Elementals, Lesser Devils, Minor Demons, Succubi,
              low order Devas, Loa, and Kachinas)

Class VIII    "Metaspectres."  Definate, but not necessarily
              human, form.  Totally self-aware with an identity. 
              They have a totally magical nature.  May haunt and
              may possess.  (Some Conceptual form creatures,
              Greater Devils, Major Demons, Angels, Demigods,
              Loa, and Kachinas)

Class IX      "Megaspectres."  Definate, but not necessarily
              human, form.  Totally self-aware with an identity. 
              They have a totally magical nature.  May haunt and
              may possess.  (Some Conceptual form creatures,
              Lesser Gods, Greater Angels,  Loa, Kachinas, Arch
              Devils, Devil and Demon Princes, Dukes and Lords).

Class X       "Gods."  Definate, but not necessarily human, form. 
              They have a totally magical nature, and they may do
              anything within their general portfolio.  (Concept
              entities, Greater Gods)
