Welcome!

I am an Associate Professor and current H. Michael and Laurie Krimbill Faculty Fellow of Finance within the department of Finance and Operations Management at The University of Tulsa. I am also on the editorial board of the Engineering Economist and a Co-Chair for the Artificial Neural Networks in Engineering (ANNIE) conference. Every now and then I also comment on markets and current events, especially those related to my interests (see below), at the Bull Bear Trader blog.

My research interests are in the broad areas of Financial Risk Management, Financial Engineering, Investment, Trading, Hedge Funds, Energy and Commodity Markets, and Intelligent Systems. This involves current and past research on stocks and financial derivatives (options, futures, forwards, swaps), credit derivatives and derivative pricing models, financial risk and uncertainty, GARCH models, Value-at-Risk, financial forecasting, equity valuation, and engineering economics. I am also interested the hedge fund industry, including their risk, return, and trading strategies, as well as methods for hedge fund replication. Finally, I have an interest in student-driven investment funds.

Some of the aforementioned research involves the use of “intelligent" and/or "smart” mathematical and computer models. Techniques include using neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and evolutionary systems, expert systems, intelligent agents, artificial life, self-organizing systems, particle swarm and ant colony optimization techniques, and dynamic and complex systems. I also use simulation, traditional optimization, forecasting, data mining, principal component analysis, and various other forms of applied statistics.

The buttons to the left will provide you with more specifics about current and past research activities, as well as the excellent students, faculty, research labs, and centers that I have had the privilege to be involved with and collaborate - some of which include my previous position at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (previously UMR), where I was the founder and previous director of the Laboratory for Investment and Financial Engineering.
