Military Materials

Pre-Revolutionary

(From Harry Arnold):
"...pay for the militia and for services to Chevette's batallion resulting from the expedition of Governor Lyttleton in October to December 1759. "....Adolph LeGrand 29.2" JCHA 30, July 1761 From Marge Motes' Saluda and Little River Settlements 1749-1775, Southern Historical Press, 1994
LeGrand is listed with no place of origin along with nine men from Laurens and Newberry Counties (Saluda - Little River) and a few more with Newberry-like names (William Cannon, Martin Keinard). According to Motes (Mottes in 1759), Lyttleton led the expedition to the frontier in response to the growing threat from the Cherokees in order to resupply fortifications and to negotiate with the Cherokee leaders. By December 26, 1759, desertions, smallpox and measels forced Lyttleton to sign a treaty with the Cherokee which did not last until February.

South Carolina Casualties.
Letter to King George regarding murder of 300 subjects in 96th District, S. Camden, and Charleston. This list compiled by Thomas Fletchall, Joseph Robinson, and Evan McLaurin ("three of S.C.'s most famous Loyalist leaders") is also found in Davis, R.S. "Tories murdered in the South Carolina Upcountry in  the Revolution" The South Carolina magazine of ancestral research, v.9, no.3 (Summer 1981), pp 123-127; and found in the Library of Congress transcripts of the British Colonial records, C.O. 305/82, fos. 597-600.  Includes:

  • Frederick Legrone
  • Thomas Largin
  • Richard Largin

"In giving the above list of Persons Massacred in this Province, we have confined us to 96 District, the southern part of Camden, and the upper parts of Orangeburg, with five in Charleston, and from every account we can safely say that at least thrice the number have been butchered and hanged in like manner -- not one of those fell in action, but were killed at their plantations, or after they had been made prisoners-- we would particularize the circumstances but think it an unnecessary intrusion upon your time" (dated 19 April 1782).
